KELLIE: WE WANT TO UPDATE THE BREAKING NEWS IN SACRAMENTO, TWO DOZEN PEOPLE INJURED IN A TRAIN TO RAIL MEANT HAPPENING NEAR ROSEVILLE ROAD AND MARCONI AVENUE NEAR THE ARCADE RT STATION AND NOT FAR FROM THE golf COMPLEX. GULSTAN: 22 PEOPLE HAVE BEEN HURT. TWO HAVE MODERATE INJURIES AND THE REST ARE WHAT THEY CALL THE WALKING WOUNDED. WE HAVE INFORMATION FOR PEOPLE TRYING TO GET HOME. EDIE: ON THE WEBSITE, THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT THE SERVICE DISRUPTION. THERE IS NOW A BUS BRIDGE BETWEEN WATT AVENUE AND I-80. BETWEEN THOSE STATIONS, PASSENGERS ARE ABLE TO TAKE BUSES TO GET AROUND THE DERAILMENT. GULSTAN: THE INJURED MAY HAVE CUTS OR BRUISES. THERE ARE 40 FIREFIGHTERS TO THE CAMP AS WELL AS MORE THAN A DOZEN AMBULANCES AND SOME PEOPLE ARE STANDING AROUND WATCHING, SEEING WHAT’S GOING ON. IT’S BEEN DESCRIBED AS A COLLISION, HAPPENED JUST BEFORE 10:00 TONIGHT. YOU SEE ONE MAN TAKEN FROM THE WRECKAGE SEEN AND IT LOOKS LIKE WE ARE GETTING READY TO HEAR FROM THEM ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED IN THE MOMENTS LEADING UP TO THAT COLLISION OR DERAILMENT. EDIE: LET’S HEAD TO THAT NEWS CONFERENCE. OK, WE ARE SEEING THEY ARE SETTING UP, STILL MAKING SURE ALL THE MICROPHONES ARE WORKING. BUT WE KNOW THIS IS NOW COMING UP ANY MINUTE NOW. WE DO WANT TO MAKE SURE WE GET THIS INFORMATION. GULSTAN: LET’S TRY THAT AGAIN. >> GOOD EVENING. I’M CAPTAIN WADE AND I’M THE PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER FOR THE SACRAMENTO fire DEPARTMENT. AT 9:43 P.M. TIME, SACRAMENTO RECEIVED A CALL FOR A MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT WITH POSSIBLE EXTRICATION. OUR FIRST ARRIVING UNIT THOUGHT THIS WAS A TRAIN INCIDENT OF SOME SORT. BY TRAIN, I MEAN LIGHT RAIL TRAIN. WE ARE WITHIN THE LIMITS OF SACRAMENTO CITY. THEY ALLAN’S THIS car FOR MORE RESOURCES TO RESPOND AS THEY DETERMINE MORE PATIENTS. THEY THEN DECLARED A MULTI-CASUAL INCIDENT. RIGHT NOW, THE TOTAL NUMBER OF PATIENTS WE HAVE IS 27. 13 OF THEM WERE TRANSPORTED TO TO TRAUMA HOSPITALS. THE OTHER REMAINING AMOUNT WERE TREATED ON SCENE AND RELEASED. NO ONE HAD ANY LIFE-THREATENING INJURIES AND THERE WERE NO DEATHS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS INCIDENT. THERE WERE ONLY TWO THAT WERE DETERMINED TO BE MODERATE, CLASSIFIED AS MODERATE. THE REST WERE WALKING WOUNDED OR DELAYED, MEANING WE ARE NOT IN A NEED TO RUSH THEM TO THE HOSPITAL. NOT AN EMERGENCY. ALONG WITH THE fire DEPARTMENT, WE HAVE THE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND REGIONAL TRANSIT, WHICH OVERSEES THE LIGHT RAIL, ON SCENE. WE ARE IN THE EARLY STAGES OF AN INVESTIGATION. RIGHT NOW, EVERYONE TRANSPORTED THAT NEEDED TRANSPORT HAS BEEN TRANSPORTED. WE HAD 15 AMBULANCES ON SCENE AS WELL AS OVER 40 FIREFIGHTER PERSONNEL. RIGHT NOW, I WILL TAKE ANY QUESTIONS. >> WHAT LED TO THIS? >> RIGHT NOW, IT’S SO EARLY IN THE INVESTIGATION. I DON’T HAVE INFORMATION IN REGARDS TO WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENED. EARLY REPORTS, PEOPLE WERE TRYING TO SAY IT WAS 80 RAIL MEANT. OTHERS SAY IT WAS A COLLISION. I HAVE NO FACTS OR INFORMATION IN REGARDS TO WHAT OCCURRED. ALL I CAN SAY IS PEOPLE WERE INJURED. >> IT’S HARD TO TELL IN THE DARKNESS HERE. DID THE TRAIN TURN OVER? IS IT OFF THE TRACKS? >> IT DOES NOT APPEAR THAT IT TURNED OVER. IT APPEARS IT IS STILL UPRIGHT AND ON THE Trucks. >> DID YOU HAVE TO CUT PEOPLE OUT OR WERE THEY ABLE TO GET OUT? >> THERE WERE NO REPORTS OF ANY EXTRICATION NEEDED. EVERYONE WAS EITHER EXTRICATED ON THEIR OWN, SELF EDUCATED, OR THEY REQUIRED ASSISTANCE FROM THE fire DEPARTMENT. BUT THERE WERE NO TOOLS OR JAWS OF LIFE REQUIRED. >> DID YOU FIND ANOTHER car? >> I DON’T HAVE THAT INFORMATION. >> WHAT KIND OF INJURIES ARE WE TALKING ABOUT? >> ANYTHING ASSOCIATED WITH EVEN A MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT. THEY WERE JUST LABELED. THEY DON’T TAKE THE TIME TO GO THROUGH EACH PERSON AND YOU DON’T SAY A BRUISE OR LACERATION. THIS ISN’T LIFE-THREATENING. THESE ARE MODERATE INJURIES, ANYWHERE FROM SOME BLEEDING CUTS , MAYBE BROKEN BONES, BUT NOTHING LIFE-THREATENING. IT’S NOT SOMETHING THEY ARE GOING TO RUSH. >> BROKEN BONES? >> THAT CAN BE LABELED AS MODERATE. AND THEN DELAYED CAN BE ANYWHERE FROM SCRATCHES, SOME BRUISES, MINOR ACHES AND PAINS. THEY NEED TO BE SEEN BY A physician, AS WELL. WE’RE NOT RUSHING THEM OFF. ACCORDING TO WHO NEEDS TO GO FIRST. >> YOU DON’T KNOW IF THERE WAS A SECOND TRAIN? >> I DO NOT HAVE THAT INFORMATION. >> UNUSUAL SITUATION. >> FIRST ONE FOR ME AND MY 19 YEARS, WITH THIS MANY PATIENTS BEING NEEDED TO BE TRANSPORTED. THE GOOD THING, WE’RE HAPPY NO ONE LOST HER LIFE AND NO ONE WAS IN ANY CRITICAL CONDITION. WE HAD PLENTY RESOURCES ON SCENE IN A TIMELY MATTER TO HELP MITIGATE. >> WERE THERE OTHER AGENCIES INVOLVED? >> SACRAMENTO fire ASSISTED. THERE ARE PRIVATE AS IT — PRIVATE AMBULANCE COMPANIES THAT SHOWED UP. >> THE CHALLENGES INVOLVED, IT’S OBVIOUSLY DARK, WEIRD TERRAIN. WHAT DID YOU GUYS EXPERIENCE? >> ANYTIME, AS YOU CAN SEE, ESPECIALLY THIS LOCATION, IT’S HARD WHEN A TRAIN TRAVELING ON A ROAD, MOST FIREFIGHTERS ARE ALL DONE BY ROADS SO WHEN YOU GET TO A ROAD LIKE THIS, WE HAVE TO GO TO OUR EYES AND WE HOPE SOMEBODY IS FLAGGING US, GIVING US THAT INFORMATION. THERE WAS A GATE THAT WE HAD TO CUT TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE TRACKS. THOSE ARE THINGS WE DEAL WITH IN AN INCIDENT LIKE THIS, WHERE TRAFFIC. >> WHAT IS NEXT? >> THAT’S UP TO LIGHT RAIL AND SPD, WHO IS INVOLVED. THEY WILL BE CONDUCTING THEIR INVESTIGATION. WE ARE A RESCUE ORIENTED ORGANIZATION SO WE TREAT THE INJURED AND THEN WE USUALLY TAKE A STEP BACK. THERE WILL BE OTHER PEOPLE THAT CAN SPEAK TO THE ACTUAL OCCURRENCE THAT HAPPENED AT HERE LATER ON ONCE THE INVESTIGATION YIELDS BETTER DETAILS. >> WHO’S GOT THE RIGHT OF WAY? >> I BELIEVE IT’S A LIGHT RAIL TRACK BUT I CAN’T SPEAK WITH ANY SORT OF AUTHORITY ON THAT. >> IS THIS GOING TO DISRUPT travel FOR TOMORROW? >> JUST A GUESS, BUT I’D SAY YES. ANY SORT OF COMMUTERS THAT USE THE LIGHT RAIL WILL BE IMPACTED AT THIS POINT.
